NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WWAY) — The Ashley Lady Eagles Girls Flag Football team made history on Saturday at Legion Stadium.
Ashley defeated the New Hanover Wildcats in the championship game 39-6 to win the first ever New Hanover County Schools Girls Flag Football League Championship. Ashley finished the season undefeated with a record of 11-0, cruising to victory in many of their games.
Quarterback Sawyer Rigdon threw 7 touchdowns on the day, with Mia Agrillo adding two interceptions on the defensive side. While helping lead their team to victory, they both hope to see the sport continue to evolve.
“I think seeing how much fun everyone has, how big the sport got in such little amount of time is going to have a huge impact on schools from now on,” Agrillo said.
“I think we’re going to get more teams to start playing just cause everyone’s having fun out here, win or lose,” Rigdon added.
